Film 329 in the “1001 Films to See Before You Die” challenge is 1971’s “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song”. Directed, written and staring Melvin Van Peebles, this crime drama thriller is about a black male prostitute who goes on the run from “the man” with the help of the ghetto community and some disillusioned Hells Angels. This film has a plot? Really? Because I sure as hell didn’t find one. All I saw was sex, sex and more sex. What this film is basically telling me is that I should be watching porn than this film. So why did this film get added to the “1001 films” list with a complicated plot and a IMDb rating of 5.5? Beats me. There were things in this film I saw that cannot be unseen. One of the first things you see during the opening credits is a woman having sex with a child. Apparently, the woman was a prostitute and the child was Sweetback working as a towel boy in a brothel. I only know that now thanks to Wikipedia as this film did nothing to tell me that these women were prostitutes or that the child was in fact Sweetback. And as an extra kick in the dick, that child having sex was played by Mario Van Peebles. Yes, Melvin Van Peebles filmed his own son having sex with a woman!!!!! I mean… what the fuck! Avoid this film with extreme caution. Only the foolish would watch this film in full. I managed 21 minutes before screaming “FUCK THIS FILM”. In 2005, Melvin Van Peebles had this to say about the film, “Blaxploitation is not my term. I don’t consider myself a sociologist, I consider myself a filmmaker, among other things. Maybe an asshole, but a filmmaker”. Fun Fact – Van Peebles pretended to make a porn film to save money. This allowed him to hire a black and nonunion crew. He did however get $50,000 loaned to him by Bill Cosby. If you have seen this film then let me know what you thought of it in the comments. Here is what I had to say while watching 1971’s “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song”

Film – Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song
Year – 1971
Director – Melvin Van Peebles
Written by – Melvin Van Peebles
Staring – Melvin Van Pebbles, Simon Chuckster, Hubert Scales
IMDb Rating – 5.5
Length – 97 min (1h 37min)
Genre – Crime, Drama, Thriller

We open with a group of women looking miserable while a child eats food

Why do we have a quote from the dark ages?

“This film is dedicated to all the brothers and sisters who had enough of The Man”

What’s with the awkward posing to pour water in a bowl?

Erm… Is this really happening?

Yes… Yes it is!

That woman is having underage sex with that child – Yes! You read that correctly

And there’s no option to skip/fast forward

So… “Sweet Sweetback” is actually referring to this child’s penis?!? – Or is that his name

“Staring – The Black Community”

Barely made it past the opening credits and I’m already about to turn this film off

So… He just turned from a child to a man in the space of one sex scene?!?

Cut to a group of people getting together for a show in the living room – I think

So… These cops wanna arrest a black man just to make them look good to the chief?

And now for lesbian sex with one girl dressed as a man with a beard

In comes a Fairy Godmother to the show waving a sparkler

So… The bearded woman was actually a man with boobs?

And now for more Sweetback sex

So… Wikipedia has told me that these sex scenes are ‘unsimulated’???

So… There’s no such thing as interracial sex in this film?

That play made about as less sense as this film’s plot

The cops then take Sweetback away for their “arrest”

I haven’t a clue what’s happening

I think that actor nearly drove over the cameraman

WOW!!! Those graphics look terrible!

It’s a little hard to see anything as it appears the only light source is a torch

So… These cops are just beating up a black person?!

Wait… Sweetback just attacked them – Would have liked to have seen that but instead the screen flashed white
