Rashomon #MovieReview

Film 289 in the ‘1001 Films to See Before You Die’ challenge is 1950’s “Rashomon”. Directed by Akira Kurosawa and based on two novels by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, “Rashomon” and “In a Grove”, this mystery crime drama is about a heinous crime and its aftermath are recalled from differing points of view. “It’s human to lie. Most of the time we can’t even be honest with ourselves”. “But it’s because men are weak that they lie, even to themselves”. Think that sums up live in general depending on who you ask. But that’s not what I’m talking about now. I’m talking about his film. And… IT WAS AWESOME!!!! The only problem I would have is the ending. It, sort of, comes out of nowhere with no explanation. I think I may have found a new favourite actor in this film in Toshiro Mifune. This man was fantastic in this film. From being a sword swinging crazy mad man to actually showing emotion towards the end of the film. Don’t get me wrong, everyone in this film was great but Mifune was the star of the show. Overall, this is a film I would definitely everyone go out and watch. Fun Fact – This film is one of the earliest productions to feature hand-held camera footage. If you have seen this film then let me know what you thought of it in the comments. Here is what I had to say while watching 1950’s ‘Rashomon’

Just realised that Japanese text is vertical not horizontal

We open with a two men sat in a ruined temple in the rain

Strange story? I’ve seen/heard strange stories so lets see if this tops it

This story just make a priest loose his faith

Take your time telling this story – The rain doesn’t look like it’s gonna stop anytime soon

Flashback to 3 days ago where we see a man walking through the mountains with an axe

Even though he’s walking, this music sounds like something’s about to happen

So… He’s gone from getting wood to finding out where all these rags have come from

Turns out he’s found a dead body in the woods and tells his story to the police

Flashback again to the priest who spots the woman who was murdered riding a horse

Tajomaru has been captured and is believed to be the killer

17 arrows to the back and he’s still alive?!?

Now for Tajomaru’s side of the story

I get the feeling Tajomaru is a little… insane

I only kill when the wind rustles through the leaves

Well.. At least he’s honest about killing them

So far I’m interested and it’s making it hard for me to say anything about this film

Excuse me while I stare at your horse

You have a grave of swords and mirrors?!?

Wait… Did you just give him your sword just so you can have a few minutes with the woman?!?

Nope! Turns out he’s taking the guard to the grave to prove himself worthy

Well… That guard died

And Tajomaru is still insane – Think it’s the laugh

Well.. Better show this woman the dead body

Oh.. He’s not dead! He’s just tied up

You tied up my man… PREPARE TO DIE!

This tree will save me from murder

And Tajomaru just forced himself on her… AND SHE LIKES IT!!!! WTF?!?!

Wait.. She wants him to kill her husband

This is what I came to see! A sword fight in the woods with Mifune

WOW! I’m already 33 minutes into this film! And I’ve enjoyed every minute so far

And Tajomaru wins and even kept count at how many times they crossed swords – 23

I traded the sword for booze and the dagger… I left it behind on puprose HAHAHAHA

Back to present day and everyone agrees that Tajomaru is a womanizer – Wonder if that’s who Britney Spears was singing about

‘It’s human to lie’

‘But it’s because men are weak that they lie, even to themselves’

Time for the woman’s side of the story

She claims she was shoved down and Tajomaru ran away laughing

Wait… She wants to be beaten up by her husband – Is everyone in this film messed up?

Now she wants him to kill her but the husband just sits there smiling

Well then… If you won’t kill me… Then I’ll kill you

Now she doesn’t remember anything because she fainted but did see her dagger in her husbands chest

Now she’s upset that she isn’t dead – WHAT THE F************

And back to present day

‘Women use their tears to fool everyone before they fool themselves’

‘Dead men don’t lie” – They also tell no tale

Where did he get that apple from?

Back to the crazy woman doing some spiritual dance in order to hear her husband from the dead

Why does she have eyebrows drawn on her forehead? Or are those dirt marks?

The husband claims she loved Tajomaru

Someone’s story doesn’t add up

Who’s telling the truth here?

Sounds like the dead husband is speaking the truth judging by her facial expressions

So… She ran away before Tajomaru could kill her

So… He killed himself with her dagger

Back to present day and no one believes anyone’s story – Neither do I

WHO’S TELLING THE TRUTH HERE?

So.. Tajomaru well do anything for this woman to love him

Wow! ‘Shameless whore’! That’s one way to describe her

‘Women are weak by nature’

Now this woman has officially lost and demands someone die while she laughs like a maniac

Time for another sword fight

Now both men have lost their swords until Tajomaru gets his out of the mud

Now the husband is dead… again… and now she doesn’t want Tajomaru

Back to present day and no one still believes anyones story

Is that a baby I can hear?

Wait… There’s been a baby here this entire time

THE END
