F for Fake #MovieReview

Film 230 in the “1001 Films to See Before You Die” challenge is 1973’s “F for Fake”. Or as it’s known in French “Vérités et mensonges” which stands for ‘Truth and Lie’. This Orson Welles documentary film essay is about fraud and fakery focusing on Elmyr de Hory’s career as a forger. Well… At least I think it’s a documentary. I’m not entirely sure. This film bounces around so much that I ended up getting completely lost about what was happening. One minute I’m watching a scene on Elmyr and then five seconds later it changes to Clifford Irving’s career before going back to Elmyr a few seconds later. They showed footage of a woman (Oja Kodar) walking down a street in France and called it “girl watching” so show that men like seeing women in tight clothes. Again, that’s what I think is happening as this film doesn’t explain it. To sum up, this film is more bouncier than a ball. If you have seen this film then let me know what you thought of it in the comments. Here is what I managed to say while watching 1973’s “F for Fake”large_tsIrAQ7YkrHvTdMJIMaIHcRosVG

We start by watching people watch a man change a key into a coin andd back into a key
I’m confused already
Where did the rabbit come from?
Orson tells us that this is a film about lies and says everything we see is true
Hello Elmyr de Hory
Elmyr has a career in making fake paintings
Now I really am confused
We then spend a minute watching a woman walk down a street
Who cares about these buildings to photograph then theres a woman walking
Orson tells us that this footage of Oja is to show that men know a woman when they see one
Orson just used magic to shove Oja in a briefcase
Have a shot everytime the word “fake” is said
“Wine around the ear brings good luck”
Now we’re in Ibiza
So… Clifford Irving’s wife is wanted by Swiss police?!?
Elmyr and Clifford have a chat about forgery
Now we get Elmyr’s version of accounts
So… This is the Ibiza that no one talks about – We only talk about the party Ibiza
Someone wearing a turtleneck from Minnesota says he’s become Elmyr’s bodyguard talking to him
Clifford is being sued for $55 million for slander
If the forgery goes wrong… just burn it!
They have the Daily Express in Ibiza which has an article on Elmyr
I’M LOST NOW… hello
