1931’s Frankenstein #MovieReview

Film 227 in the “1001 Films to See Before You Die” challenge is 1931’s “Frankenstein”. Based on Mary Shelley’s novel of the same name, this James Whale horror is about a scientist and his assistant who dig up corpses to build a monster, but his assistant accidentally gives the monster a murderer’s brain. Going into this film, I was wondering if my enjoyment of this film would be slightly ruined after I watched “Young Frankenstein” a while back. And it was as this film was really boring to watch. Even the experiment scene was dull to watch. Even the actors looked bored being in this film. Speaking of actors, whoever played Frankenstein clearly doesn’t know what facial expressions to use. For example, he is getting locked in a room by the scientist and rather look angry, he looks like he’s about to laugh at any moment. Overall, this was really boring to watch and doesn’t really hold up today. When this film was released in 1931, Mordaunt Hall from The New York Times had this to say, “There is no denying that it is… the most effective thing of it’s kind. Beside it Dracula is tame.” Fun Fact of the Film – Bela Lugosi was originally set to play Frankenstein but turned down the role as he didn’t want a non-speaking role. If you have seen this film then let me know what you thought of it in the comments. Here is what I had to say while watching 1931’s “Frankenstein”

Some old man gives a speech about the film before the opening credits
Wait… The credits don’t know who played Frankenstein?
Cut to a funeral where two men watch on from a distance
Since when could you light a match by using the bottom of your boot
Quick… undig the grave and steal the body
I hope they refilled the grave with mud otherwise people are going to be a bit suspicious
On the way home, they take the body of a dead man being hung
All he wants is a brain
The assistant is sent to a school to steal a brain
Shit! I’ve broken the jar with the normal brain! Better take the abnormal brain and escape
Meanwhile, Victor meets with Elizabeth about a letter sent by the scientist
They ask the doctor from the university about why the scientist left
Back at the castle, the scientist and his assistant make preperations before their experiment
The brain has been inserted into a dead body and the scientist brings on bringing him back to life
Who dare interupt me 15 minutes before my experiment take place
Elizabeth and two men arrive and ask the scientist to return
The scientist takes them to his lab and shows them the body
Let the experiment begin
The hand… It’s moving!
Back at Elizabeth’s home, her and Victor talk to Baron
The scientist then talks to the tutor about the experiment
The scientist then teaches Frankenstein basic things like walking and sitting
Frankenstein then attacks the assistant
Frankenstein has hung the assistant
Why is Frankenstein constantly smiling at everything?
The tutor drugs Frankenstein but Frankestein start choking the scientist
Victor arrives and tells them that Elizabeth and Baron are on their way
That backdrop doesn’t look fake at all
Baron and Elizabeth arrive to find the scientist on the floor in his lab
The tutor begins to disect Frankenstein but gets choked to death
Frankenstein has escaped
The scientist and Elizabeth are back at her house
Time for a party
Meanwhile, Maria plays with a kitten by the pond only to find Frankenstein
Sod the kitten, I have a new friend to play with
Wait.. Was this a wedding party?
Everyone in the town rebels as news breaks that Elizabeth has fainted
The scientist says he will kill Frankenstein and leaves Victor with Elizabeth
The scientist has been given a group to find Frankenstein in the mountains
They find Frankenstein in the mountains and chase after him with burning torches
They find Frankenstein again in a windmill with the scientist
The scientist has been knocked out and is being dragged into the attic by Frankenstein
Frankenstein just threw the scientist on one of the windmill blades and seems to be dead
Before we leave, we’d better burn the windmill down
So… I’m guessing this is where they got the idea for The Wicker Man
Frankenstein is trapped and burns to death
Back at home and all the maids have wine for everyone
