Koyaanisqatsi #MovieReview

Film 214 in the “1001 Films to See Before You Die” challenge is 1982’s “Koyaanisqatsi”. This Godfrey Reggio musical documentary consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse footage of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. Not a whole lot you can say about the film. It was a bunch of clips filmed in slow motion and footage that had been fast forwarded. In 2005, Godfrey Reggio has this to say about the film, “The film’s role is to provoke, to raise questions that only the audience can answer. This is the highest value of any work of art, not predetermined meaning, but meaning gleaned from the experience of the encounter.” This film doesn’t raise many questions. The main question would be, what was the reason for making this film? Unless you really want to know what living in America during the early 1980’s was like then go ahead and watch this. Apart from that, this film was dull and boring to watch. Fun Fact of the Film – The movie drew on several sources for its visual, including unused footage from 1980’s “The Shining”. If you have seen this film then let me know what you thought of it in the comments. Here is what I had to say while watching 1982’s “Koyaanisqatsi”

We open with a look at ancient paintings while men sing hymms
Look at the slow motion debris floating in the air
Was this filmed at an oil rig?
Nope! It’s a rocket taking off into space
There’s The Grand Canyon
We get to look at The Grand Canyon for a while – About six minutes
There’s the sky
Those clouds are moving fast
And the clouds have transformed into a waterfall
Now we’re in flying over someone’s farm
And we’re back in the desert
There’s a very long tube
(insert shot of electical towers)
Here we wee some men working in a quarry
That’s a big explosion
There’s a plane heading straight towards us
New we’re looking at traffic on a busy freeway – I can look outside my window if I want to stare at traffic
(insert old footage of explosions)
Now I’m in New York
There’s the Mircodata building
Here we see people moving in slow motion – Again, I can look outside my window if I want to see this
There’s a woman
Another woman
You don’t look happy to be in Top Gun
Old ladies on a Hen Night in Las Vegas
[insert time lapse of traffic moving]
[insert time lapse of people moving in a crowded area]
[insert time lapse of people eating]
Here’s footage of people working at General Motors… building terminators?!
Back to looking at old footage on a TV
Did someone leave the film on fast forward
There’s a man with a mullet
Now we’re looking at circuit boards
Nothings happening
There’s a naked man brushing his teeth in the street
There’s that rocket again
